Aug 28, 2022 · 1- I live in Texas, went fishing for tuna of the rigs 100 to 150 miles from Galveston, average sizes YF 30lbs to 50lbs. 2- I want a reel that can handle something like a 100lbs Tuna in case I get a hit. Go to a tackle shop and pick one up. 50Ws are perfect and even 30Ws are good. You are on a small maneuverable boat using spectra. Get a 50W, 50 or 30W, load it up with 5-600 yards of 130# JB HC and the rest with 80 or 100 mono for a topshot. The 50W will get 100-150 yards for a topshot with 600 yards of spectra.Best option for you will be the Finnor Lethal 100 if you can find one, around $99-$120. Cabo is a good second choice but watch the handle. Of course a better quality reel would be the recommended one but if you are limited by cost then any of the above reels should work.Rod will target sub 100lb class and paired with 8k Stella. Do a 24 hr overnight trip tuna trip out of Port A next fall. The boat runs are much shorter than the 36-60 hr trips. If you are using the 300lb leader you need to wet that line before pulling it, also if you're in a hot climate you will notice the flexibility of the line and it is much easier to tie it in a hot climate. Clinch Knot is the way to go.The slow jigging rods we are talking about recently are totally different. The rods are inshore rods for smaller fish using small reels spooled with PE2 - . PE5.
