I'm going to give it a full polish, as I did with my S&W 460V (3lb/12oz of chrome-like stainless beauty with a custom-made Kansas Black Walnut grip). The grip on the 686 is black plastic with a rubber covering, and frankly - it leaves a lot to be desired. Actually quite accurate for a 2.5" barrel, and I was impressed by the smooth cycle and reasonable recoil for a firearm so small. I do think the trigger pull is extremely long though, even for a DOA.

I don't know how long it was in production as a -4. They came in 2 and 4 inch barrels. Measure from the muzzle end to the face of the cylinder. The 856 is just an assembly number.
