After killing the walker and it didn't finish the 6th wave, I wandered far enough away from the pillar until it gave me a message in the corner to return. I then started fighting sentinels until I made it to 5 stars wanted level and killed the walker.

Absolutely! The most productive way I've found to do it is to perch on top of the pillar. The Walker can't jump high enough to get to you, and the sentinels seem to be limited to a narrow vertical range so you don't end up complete surrounded by them overhead.
