The Jeep 4.0 is my favorite gas inline 6. Lighter than the Ford 300 and more power. Biggest inline gas 6 I have driven was the International Harvester BR 549, rated close to the same power as a 6-71 Detroit diesel.

Nov 4, 2010. #1. I made another trip to work on this 45EM yesterday. I installed a new water pump, thermostat, and put on 3 fresh V-belts. The thermostat that was in there was stamped 160, I put in a 180 with two 5/32 holes drilled in it. When the water pump was off, I found a lot of rusty gunk in the engine.I'm a fan of the 4.2L, but it doesn't touch the 4.9L when it comes to down low pulling power. The 4.2L will run circles around the 4.9L though. For speed and mileage the 4.2 is the obvious choice.
