I recovered one SP20 wad from a pheasant this year that actually broke at the cushion and flipped around after exiting the barrel. It flew like a shuttle cock into the bird, like a slug. 1645 posts · Joined 2015. #2 · Dec 16, 2021 (Edited) There is no replacement wad. The Remington SP20 was the last 1 ounce wad for 20 gauge tapered hulls, and they are scarce also. There's a single 1 ounce load in Remington hulls using AA20 wad and HS-6 in Lyman 5th Edition Handbook.

Using the SP20 wad in the STS case left way too much extra room in the hull, and substituting a RXP20 gave me funny sounding shells. Another load that I came across today would be: STS case, Win Primer, 21.5gr Blue Dot, SP20, 1oz lead, for 10,600 PSI (200 psi more than my regular 7/8oz target load w/ Universal Clays). When I moved up to a MEC 9000 reloader, the results still were not good, perhaps even worse. I tried increasing the wad pressure to 60 – 70 lbs but I was told by MEC that I should not do that. MEC recommended either Downrange wads or Remington RPX wads. I tried the Down Range wads and the Remington wads and I prefer the Remington wads.

DLM If the SP 20 is a tapered wall wad, it was redesigned as the SP 20 predates the tapered wall hull. They were originally loaded in the fiber based SP hulls. The WAA 20F1 wad has been discontinued for years and the Rem SP20 wad seemingly not in production. I have about 100 of the SP20 wads left.
