I've owned many vws with over 200k miles. Various engines. 8v 1.8l from the 80's, v6 from the 90's, vr6 from the 90's, 2.0 8v from the early 2000's, 1.9 tdi from late 90's. I just replaced my 88' 16V GTI with a Subaru last December. The car is as old as me, and I owned it from the age of 15. They are fairly reliable, I have seen quite a few get to 200K with no maintenance and they have been using it since around 2005. I would personally change the fluid/filter every 50K.
